Whether you're mounting a TV, arranging picture frames or putting up a shelf, having the right hand tools and stud finder makes any job safer and easier. Learn how to use a stud sensor or magnetic stud finder and find the right fit for your next project at Ace Hardware.

How to Find Studs in the Wall

While house studs are usually placed in even intervals, it's always a good idea to use a wall stud finder to confirm their locations. A dependable stud detector can save you time and energy in costly repairs and is an affordable option for DIY and commercial projects alike.

Follow these simple steps to begin using your stud finder:

  1. If using an electric stud sensor, check the batteries and calibrate your device to ensure it is ready and able to provide accurate results.
  2. Locate where you’d like to install your TV, shelves, or painting.
  3. Place the flat side of your stud finder on the wall.
  4. Move your device to the left and right until the finder indicates that it has located the closest stud.
  5. Clearly mark your installation point for later reference.
  6. Double-check your stud location by moving your finder up and down, then left and right again.

Whether you’re using an electric or magnetic stud finder, it will beep or blink when it locates a stud, letting you know the right place to begin working. However, they can occasionally identify a false positive, so it's always a good idea to double-check any stud locations to make sure you've got a solid hit.

Which Stud Finder is Right for You?

While most wood stud finders are used in the same way, the range of designs and technologies means some are better suited to certain jobs. Before you start drilling, pick up the right type of stud detector for your needs by considering the following questions.

Are You Working with Drywall or Plaster?

Both traditional electronic and magnetic stud detectors are adept at locating studs in drywall. However, if you're reading against a plaster wall, you may want to try using an advanced electronic stud finder. They are typically more accurate than just magnetic stud finders and can find studs located further into the wall. This is done by finding metal screws and nails inside the stud rather than the stud itself and perform more dependably on plaster walls.

What Do You Need for Exterior Walls?

While classic electronic and magnetic stud finders are a great fit for indoor work, drilling into exterior walls can sometimes present extra challenges. Vertical furring strips inside exterior walls offer a great place to anchor but they can often be located near outlets and switches. Avoid drilling into important electrical components by buying a stud finder with a built-in, non-contact voltage sensor, or NCV, to alert you when you're near a current.
