Bench Saws vs Stationary Table Saws

When shopping for a new miter saw stand, or table saw bench, the first thing you'll need to know is what each saw classification means and what you can expect from its performance. Three common types of table saws include bench saws, compact table saws and stationary saws.

Bench Saws

Benchtop saws, or job site saws, are lightweight, relatively affordable and portable. These table saws are ideal for users who want to perform an array of light-duty work in garages or workshops. If your main goal is to cut soft materials like plywood or softer woods like pine, a bench saw might be a great fit for your needs.

Compact Table Saws

Compact table saws have many of the same characteristics as bench saws, but they're often designed with extra features like stands, anti-kickback pawls and metal rolling cage bases for job site durability. Both compact table saws and benchtop saws feature lightweight construction and direct-drive universal motors that deliver dependable performance for a range of applications. Some compact table saw models even resemble the design of full-size table saws, but their rip capacities are not as expansive.

Stationary Table Saws

Stationary saws tend to be more stable than compact table saws, especially if you're working on projects that require cutting large pieces of wood. Often used by professionals, stationary band saws are great for users who require extra power, cutting precision and rip accuracy for complex projects.

Different Types of Benchtop Saws

Benchtop saws are highly portable, making them great to transport from job site to job site. Different bench saws include:

  • Tile Saw: Sometimes referred to as wet tile saws, they are ideal for cutting ceramic, porcelain and stone tiles into special designs or to fit edges perfectly.
  • Miter Saw: Use a miter saw for general carpentry needs. Great with wood, when it comes to cutting angles and bevels, miter saws are essential.
  • Chop Saw: Sometimes confused with miter saws due to looks, chop saws are designed to cut metal, while miter saws work better with wood.
  • Scroll Saw: Scroll saws let you create intricate designs and patterns and are used for specialty projects where precision is key.

Do I Need a Band Saw?

A band saw is a great example of a high-powered stationary table saw that can help you cut through just about any material you will work with, including metal, wood and more. They are great at cutting long pieces of wood lengthwise with precision and lend that precision cutting attribute to curves, corners, edges and other intricate details. A portable bandsaw is the ideal option for the woodworker on the go.

Band saws require a higher expertise, so those just starting out should work their way up to using them.

Cordless vs. Corded Table Saws

If you regularly cut larger or thicker pieces of materials, a corded band saw or corded table saw may deliver the extra power and accuracy you need. Corded models are often preferred by users who primarily work in dedicated workshops or garage spaces. On the other hand, cordless table saws may be a better fit for contractors moving around to multiple locations.
