Lighter than chain and more flexible than wire, rope can provide temporary or semi-permanent fixings for a wide variety of applications around the home, yard, worksite and dockside. For less-demanding work, twine offers even more flexibility along with tight knotting and easy cutting to size. At Ace Hardware, you can buy both types of cord in a range of materials and sizes to suit your tying or fixing tasks.
What's the Difference Between Rope and Twine?
The most basic difference between rope and twine is that rope is thicker on the whole and has the strength to support weights as well as fix items together. However, the two types of cordage are also made in different ways. The braided rope consists of many thin fibers twisted tightly together to form a single strong cord, while most twine is made from two or three separate cords wrapped together.
Choosing Your Twine and Braided Rope Materials
Both rope and twine are available in various materials that suit different tasks. Some of our most popular sellers include:
- Sisal rope: Made from a plant-derived material, sisal rope is a resilient cord with low stretch levels and high resistance to sunlight. Sisal twine is also available, and both types of cord have a rough texture that provides a good grip for knotting.
- Jute: Another plant-based material that has similar properties to sisal, jute has a slightly softer texture that makes the rope a little easier to handle.
- Polypropylene ropes: Polypropylene ropes are a great choice for use in watery situations, such as marine applications or swimming pools, thanks to their waterproof properties and resistance to rotting. However, their overall strength makes polypropylene ropes a great all-around option for almost any use.
- Nylon rope: Another synthetic cord that provides perhaps the highest strength of any rope, nylon rope is also stretchable to absorb shocks. It also has a high melting point that makes it useful in industrial situations. However, both nylon rope and nylon twine will easily soak up water and become heavy, which reduces their strength.
- Polyester rope: Similar to nylon rope but with one important difference: polyester rope doesn't absorb water as easily and can be used in marine applications. However, it will sink in water rather than float.
- Cotton: Cotton makes for soft ropes that are not very durable and absorb water easily. However, they are solid options for light indoor uses like crafting.
Choose Your Rope and Twine Sizes
Our cord range includes braided rope and twine in diameters from a fraction of an inch up to an inch and more, and in lengths from just over 10 feet to a couple hundred feet or more, providing a size to suit many projects. Ace also stocks a wide range of colors, including natural, white or more eye-catching shades like red that ensure high visibility for greater safety.
