Floor Wax or Floor Polisher: What's the Difference?

Floor wax and floor polish are both used to protect wooden floors from scuffs and scrapes, while also adding shine and slip resistance. However, they're not the same kind of product.

• Floor wax is made of largely natural ingredients and was the traditional way of protecting and shining floors when regular wood or stone were the most common materials.
• Floor polish is made from a blend of synthetic ingredients with formulas tweaked to work with many kinds of flooring materials, from stained hardwood through linoleum to vinyl and more.

Guide to Using a Wood Floor Polish

Applying a hardwood floor polish is a quick and easy task that should be done every few months to maintain a glossy and protective surface. However, for the best results, it's important to do a thorough job, and here's how.

1. Clear the room as far as possible by taking out movable furniture and other items to leave the floor free for vacuuming.
2. Mop or squeegee it with your usual floor cleaner.
3. Wearing cleaning gloves, apply a thin layer of polish to the floor, and gently spread it into the surface using a sponge or applicator pad, following the wood grain or other pattern to prevent smears from showing up.
4. Use enough polish to make the floor look slightly wet, but not enough so that the liquid pools or spreads around in waves.
5. Allow the polish to dry for at least an hour before walking over it. Ideally, you would leave it overnight before replacing the furniture and starting to use the room as normal. With most floor polishes, there's no need to buff the finish after it's dry.

How to Use Floor Waxing

Applying floor wax is very similar to using polish. The key difference is that floor wax can be applied in several coats for greater protection in heavily trafficked areas. For most homes, one or two coats will be enough, but up to four wax applications can be useful for busy commercial use. Each coat should be allowed to dry for roughly an hour before adding the next. If you can, let the final coat cure overnight before using the floor again.
