Different Types of Fencing

Build your garden or field fence out of the right materials to meet your needs. In our fencing selection, you’ll find multiple types of materials in a range of sizes to serve specific purposes.

Welded Wire Fence

Made from durable steel wires, this fencing is welded along the cross points for extra reinforcement. The galvanized coating helps resist rust and corrosion, making a welded steel wire fence a great choice for keeping your animals where they should be. What’s more, the strength and durability of a welded wire poultry fence are also a great option for keeping predators out.

Vinyl-Coated Chicken Wire Fence

Lightweight but sturdy, this poultry netting features galvanized steel wires coated in smooth vinyl. The hexagonal weave is great for making poultry fences, plant supports, compost containment and more. It also resists rusting, making it a popular choice for any climate.

How to Choose Wire Fencing

Understanding the difference between a welded wire fence and vinyl-coated poultry netting is an important first step in deciding which would work best for your needs. But when designing your chicken coop, garden, or field fence, you’ll also need to consider things like length, height, and gauge.

  • Rolled Wire Fence Length: Start by measuring the space you want to fence in so you can purchase enough poultry netting or welded wire fence material to cover the designated area. Filter through various lengths of fencing to suit small and larger projects alike.
  • Fencing Height: Your chicken wire fence should be tall enough to deter any poultry from making a leap. Find wire fence heights ranging from just a couple of feet to nearly 10 feet tall to suit projects from poultry to plant enclosures.
  • Wire Gauge: Gauge refers to the thickness of wire fencing, with the lower the number the thicker the fencing. Lower wire gauges are best for a field fence where larger animals roam, while higher gauges may suit garden or poultry fences just fine. Ultimately, it comes down to how strong your wire fence needs to be.

Hardware and Tools to Help Install a Wire Fence

Once you’ve found your wire fencing, get the tools and materials to help you build your fence. Wire cutters can help you trim your fencing to the exact proportions your project calls for—but don’t forget a tape measure. And depending on the project, you might need u-posts, t-posts or wood fencing posts.

When building out an animal enclosure, you may also need to install a gate. Shop tough and ready-to-install steel tube gates for easy in/out access, with resilient coating and welding for longer field life. For containing smaller animals, try a gate filled with galvanized steel wire that fits easily with your chicken wire fence. Find the gate latches and hardware you need to round out your field fence or chicken coop in style.
