Weed control is an essential part of gardening, keeping your flowerbeds tidy and your lawns growing green and lush. The weed control department here at Ace contains all the weed killers, concentrates, and sprays you need, with options for both organic and chemical treatments to suit your gardening preferences.
The Main Types of Weed Killer
Depending on the type of weed you're targeting and the part of your yard that needs treating, there are several different types of weed killers to choose from.
Organic Weed Killer Products
If you prefer to avoid using artificial chemicals in your garden, organic weed killer is the solution to turn to. Most organic weed solutions are made with a vinegar formula and usually come in sprays that use natural acetic acid to start killing plants as soon as they're applied. The major benefit of these eco-friendly weed killers is they don't contain any chemicals that could harm your garden crops, pets, or family. Once they've done their weed control work, they degrade harmlessly into the soil.
Another organic solution that avoids even natural chemicals is a weed burner or torch, which lets you eliminate individual weeds by flame. However, you should not burn weeds in extremely dry areas to help prevent the spread of wildfire.
Weed Killer Concentrate and Spray
Weed killer concentrates are liquid solutions that can be diluted and sprayed directly onto affected areas. By using a weed killer concentrate you can target unsightly weeds wherever they grow, from flower beds and vegetable gardens to cracks in driveways, walkways, and patios.
Weed Preventer for Long-Lasting Weed Control
For badly infested areas, weed preventer can provide a longer-term solution than other weed control methods. Instead of killing fully grown weeds, weed preventer stops seeds from germinating to keep weed problems from resurfacing. Combine a weed preventer with an all-purpose weed killer and your weed problems will be gone for good.
Weed Killer Granules
Much like grass seed, weed killer granules can be applied using a spreader, making them a great option for wiping out large areas of weeds and overgrown vegetation. Weed killer granules are ideal for spreading on walkways, along fences and under decks, although they should be used with care around plants you want to protect.
Common Types of Weeds
A weed is a plant that can cause ecological damage to existing native plants or even to animals and people in the area. Some of the most prevalent weeds include:
- Broadleaf weeds, which are leafy and often have flowers.
- Grassy weeds that look and grow like grass.
- Grass-like weeds, which are similar to grassy weeds but have solid stems instead of hollow ones.
Broadleaf, grassy and grass-like weeds are further categorized by their life cycles. Each of these categories can feature annual, biennial, or perennial weeds. Annual weeds complete their life cycles in one year and biennials in two years, but perennials can survive much longer. Read on below to learn more about the most common types of weeds and how to tackle them.
Crabgrass
Crabgrass is a fast-growing annual weed that grows in the summer and naturally dies when the ground frosts. Nip the overgrowth in the bud with a non-selective weed solution that is specifically formulated as a grass killer. We also stock selective crabgrass weed killers which you can use on your lawn.
Using a weed preventer for crabgrass is also a good strategy because crabgrass seeds can stay healthy and create new weeds for up to three years if they're allowed to germinate.
Pigweed
Another annual summer weed, pigweed is a bit leafier than crabgrass and has a red taproot. This problematic weed should be dealt with before it flowers to prevent spreading.
Dandelion
Abundant in spring, dandelions are perennials that are easily recognizable by their bright yellow flowers. After they flower, their seeds are spread widely around by the wind. Even small sections of dandelion roots can create a whole new plant, which means you must kill dandelions down to the root.
Chickweed
Chickweed is an annual that grows best in the winter in very moist areas, and makes a great habitat for insect pests as well. It grows about two inches high and has small white flowers, and if left to its own devices, it can smother other plants in your garden.
