Types of Nail Materials

Types of Nail Shanks 

A nail shank is the long part of the nail below the head and above the tip. The type of shank affects how the nail is driven into the material, as well as its structural strength. There are three types of nail shanks.

  • Ring: A ring shank nail has continuous threading, or rings, around the shank to keep it firmly locked into the wood. They are ideal for outdoor construction. 
  • Smooth: A smooth shank nail has no threading and can be used in nearly any application. However, they are not as suitable for building structures that require a lot of support. 
  • Screw: A screw shank nail has the rotation of ridges on its shank like that of a normal screw. They are easier to install than screws but have the same amount of strength. They are often used for installing decking and flooring.
