Types of Fastener Nails
- Common Nails: These most basic yet strong nails are most often used in building and construction work.
- Box Nails: These nails have thinner shanks than common nails and are used in thin pieces of lumber for light structures like trimming.
- Finishing Nails: These nails are able to be concealed inside the structure, due to their small heads. They're used to provide a smooth and polished look to finished structures.
- Drywall Nails: These are used to hang drywall during the construction process.
- Casing Nails: These nails are especially strong and typically used for attaching molding to doors and windows.
- Copper: Copper nails are used in copper fabrication, clay and cement roofing, saddlery for horses and the construction of boats. They are incredibly corrosion resistant.
- Stainless Steel: Stainless steel nails are used in outdoor construction work, due to their resistance to rust.
- Plastic: Plastic collated nails are used as framing nails. The plastic makes them durable and allows them to survive harsh weather conditions.
- Brass: Brass nails are extremely durable and strong. They have long been used in the construction of boats and houses.
- Aluminum: Another strong material for outdoor use, aluminum nails are used to install aluminum siding and metal roofing.
- Ring: A ring shank nail has continuous threading, or rings, around the shank to keep it firmly locked into the wood. They are ideal for outdoor construction.
- Smooth: A smooth shank nail has no threading and can be used in nearly any application. However, they are not as suitable for building structures that require a lot of support.
- Screw: A screw shank nail has the rotation of ridges on its shank like that of a normal screw. They are easier to install than screws but have the same amount of strength. They are often used for installing decking and flooring.
