Air Filter Basics

What's the difference between air filters, furnace filters, and AC filters?
All of these names simply mean air filter. There's no difference in performance, so you can safely use any of them in your furnace, air conditioner, air purifier, or other home filtration device.

Why are home air filters so important?

Indoor air can quickly become polluted with dust, allergens, and bacteria. By installing a clean air filter in your central heating or cooling system, you can automatically clean these pollutants from the air while you heat your home.

What are MERV ratings on air filters?

MERV, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, is a standardized measurement for air filter efficiency. The scale ranges from 1 to 20 - the higher the number, the finer the filter, and the more efficient it is at removing pollutants.

How often should I change my air filter?

For the best performance, try to change your air filter every 90 days. Leaving a filter for longer than that can result in your heating system having to work harder to deliver air, while the air filter is less efficient at removed pollutants. At Ace, we offer plenty of filters in bulk, making it quick and easy to replace your filters whenever you need.

How to Choose the Right Air Filter

With so many options for different air filters, it can be challenging to know which one is the right fit for your home. At Ace, we've shared a few simple tips to help you find the perfect furnace filters.

  1. Choose your MERV rating
    • When choosing your new air filter, begin by assessing the air filtration needs of your home. If you're looking for a simple and affordable filter that does a good job of removing general pollutants, many people start with a MERV rating of 4. However, if someone in your home has allergies or asthma, you may want a finer filter that can remove small allergen particles. MERV ratings of 8 are a popular choice for removing allergens, but filters with a rating as high as 15 are common in home use.
  2. Choose your size
    • Before you shop for a new air filter, remember to check the size of your furnace or AC unit. If you're not sure how to find the right fit, bring your old filter to your nearest Ace location and one of our associates will be happy to help you find a new match.
  3. Choose your features
    • Different types of filter materials offer different benefits, from reducing odors to removing smoke. Browse our selection of top brands to find filters designed for allergens, pollen and pet dander. We also offer a range of electrostatic air filters that are charged to filter microscopic airborne particles.
