When a project requires the ability to drive multiple nails efficiently, a nail gun is an ideal solution. Nail guns can drive thousands of nails into multiple types of materials with consistency and precision. With so many options available at Ace, you can put away your hammer and find the right nail gun type and model for your projects.
Electric Vs. Pneumatic Nail Guns
The power source of a nail gun is the primary factor that determines what type of work it can handle. We carry nail guns powered by two primary energy types: cordless and pneumatic.
Electric Nail Guns
Cordless electric nail guns are highly portable and easy to maintain. They allow you to quickly get to work because they don't require access to outlets or hoses to operate. Cordless nail guns are typically powered by lithium-ion batteries that can be recharged between uses. Additionally, some cordless models are fuel-powered and come with replaceable fuel canisters that store combustible gas.
While cordless nail guns offer increased convenience and greater mobility, they may not pack as much power as pneumatic nail guns.
Pneumatic Nail Guns
Also referred to as air compressor nail guns, pneumatic nail guns are powered by air from compressors. Often preferred by professionals, air nail guns are incredibly powerful and capable of handling many heavy-duty tasks like flooring and roofing.
A pneumatic nail gun is connected to an air compressor via an air hose and air hose fittings, and the compressor provides pressurized air to the system, which is what drives the nail once the trigger is pulled. Air compressor nail guns are easy to care for, lightweight and built to last.
What is the Best Collation Angle for a Nail Gun?
Nail gun angles determine not which angle the nail gun drives nails but how the nail gun stores nails. Angled nail guns allow for versatile use in corners and tight spaces, but knowing which angle is right for your needs can be difficult. For example, although 15-, 21-, 28-, 30- and 34-degree nailers are all common, 34-degree nailers are much more maneuverable than 15-degree nailers.
The collation angle of a nail gun also effects the type of nails the gun can use. Full-round head nails are typically used in lesser degreed nail guns, while greater degreed nail guns will use clipped nails.
Popular Nail Gun Models
Nail guns are effective in a variety of settings. Some models are more useful in heavy-duty, high-volume applications while others work well for smaller jobs.
- Framing nailer: Framing nailers often use larger nails to help you complete framing, flooring, fencing and other large-scale jobs with ease.
- Brad nailer: Shooting smaller nails, brad nailers are great for delicate jobs around the house. This light-duty nailer is ideal for DIY projects, home decorating and other similar jobs.
- Pin nailer: Usually the smallest nail gun available, you’ll be using a pin nailer for decorative jobs where you want the nail hole to hardly be visible.
- Siding nailer: Siding nailers are specifically designed for installing siding on houses. These lightweight and efficient nail guns are best suited for jobs that require you to join thinner pieces of non-wooden materials to wooden mounts.
- Finish nailer: Lightweight and useful for assembling furniture and installing wood paneling, trim, molding and cabinets, a finish nailer is designed to shoot either round or clipped heads collated by plastic, paper, wire or glue.
- Roofing nailers: Made to use with asphalt, metal, plastic, wood and fiberglass shingles and other roofing materials, roofing nailers have a wider head designed to help hold shingles down. The nails used in roofing nail guns come in coils rather than strips and range in sizes from 1 ¼ to 1 ½ inches.
Crown Staplers vs Nailers
While nailers are highly versatile, some jobs call for something different. Crown staplers are ideal for jobs like upholstery projects, insulation installation, carpeting, flooring and more that require wide, flat staples. They are good choices for working with lighter materials, while nailers can be the go to option for larger projects.
